France gave the U.S. the Statue of Liberty, symbol of freedom for the oppressed. Located in the city of New York in the United States. This monument is a gift on the Fourth of July 1884 by the French people to North America, to commemorate the alliance made by the two nations during the American Revolutionary War.
It was the French historian Edoardo de Laboulaye, who proposed that his country since 1865 made a commemorative gift to the United States, marking the first anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Although the French allies of the time protested the initiative, the sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi traveled to the North American territory to meet with the authorities. A monument such as is planned, had cost too much, so he joined a Union Franco-American fund-raiser.
The total cost of the statue, which was one million francs was covered entirely by the French. Meanwhile, the Americans brought the 250 thousand dollars needed for the pedestal.
The idea that the French Republic made a gift to American citizens occurred to sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi a summer night in 1865, while dining at the home of a historian francés.Seis years later, during a trip to New York Bartholdi, who was then 37 years had discovered the perfect location for the statue Bedloe Island in Upper New York Bay, a place visible to all ships that came to the choice of face puerto.La the statue gave many headaches to Bartholdi, who finally decided to give it the grim features of his mother, a fanatical Protestant who was mad at his son, literally, by forbidding to marry the woman he wanted: a judía.Otro problem was finding the right materials to build a statue to withstand the elements and, in turn, outside light to transport by sea, and was inspired by the Colossus of Rhodes, which was hollow, coated brass, he used thin sheets of copper.
In his right hand in an elevated position, the divinity represented in the statue carries a lighted torch, on his left hand, take the tablet of the law that is inscribed with Roman numerals the date of 4 July 1776. In addition, a broken chain lies at his feet. The Statue of Liberty National Monument was established in 1924 and its maintenance is the responsibility of the National Park Service.
The figure is made of a copper shell thickness of 2.4 millimeters, and its support is an iron designed by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, creator of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The process of making Bartholdi required to build a model of three meters, which was increased to make a figure of 11 meters high divided into sections.
Each section was subsequently increased and also the end all of them were put in place in the central structure. The Statue of Liberty is about 46 meters high and weighs 225 tons. (more on the Statue of Liberty)
The statue was to be lifted on a pedestal as tall as she, with what came to rise some 93 meters above
ground level. But he had not amassed more than half the money needed to build the pedestal. The publisher Joseph Pulitzer launched a campaign encouraging donations that were made for this cause and published in his popular newspaper, the New York World, the names of those who were contributing to the work, with much or little money. Finally, 121,000 contributed over $ 100,000. The Statue of Liberty was packed when the 15 months ended its pedestal. The pieces are unpacked and went riding on the structure of Eiffel, bottom-up, no external scaffolding. On 28 October 1886, Freedom at last raised his torch on his new home.
